PHYSIOLOGY
Shujin's physiology is rather interesting in that, while it is clearly trained, it is still scrawny in nature and appearance. This is due to him being naturally thin and small, which itself leads to stringy muscles. There is definition in his body though, and this is how one can identify it as trained. Most particularly, his muscle mass is very healthy and malleable, which reveals great degrees of flexibility training--most likely gained through meditation. At four and six feet tall, he has a rather unimpressive reach that would make it difficult to fight in close range. On top of this, his weight, eighty pounds, coupled with his small build eliminates any chance of hand to hand combat as he lacks the strength to boast.
On to his other features, Shujin has become "victim" to his genetics, boasting a pale skin tone that is rather susceptible to heat. This tends to give him a somewhat "dead" appearance on rainy days, but on sunny days, his skin seems to have a glow about it. Over the years, his skin has tanned however, which contributes to the slight glow. At eleven, he lacks any prominent hairs on his body, so his skin becomes even more sensitive to the touch (i.e. heat). He is a brunette, having inherited his dark hair from his mom. It is short, and he keeps it messy--partially out of laziness and partially because he doesn't care. Somewhat odd for a brunette though, he has deep, baby blue eyes: these he inherited from his dad. Much like his pops, his eyes are naturally very attentive in nature, which is possibly attribute to his curiosity.
When it comes to clothing, he dresses very simplistically. First, there is the light-blue hoodie that he dons most everywhere. It is attached to him like skin, mostly because of personality reasons; however, the climate of his village is also attribute to why he dons the article, as it tends to get chilly on the mountains. Underneath this is usually a plain, white T-shirt. After that there are his shorts, which are typically of dark color. They are lengthy, as that is his style, reaching an inch or two below the knee; however, he also wears a black belt as a foolproof to keep his shorts from falling. When it comes to foot wear, he wears the classic, open-toed shinobi boots. The color that he styles is black, which is his choice only because of laziness--it makes matching colors much more simple.
When it comes to his weaponry, Shujin has the typical kunai holster on his right thigh and the equally typical item pouch on his left buttock. While this limits his inventory to the basics, he will occasionally carry a backpack that will be filled with extra items, though this happens only during missions. Finally, there is Shujin's love for hats, which he will typically use in place of a headband. While his hats differ in design, they all share Iwagakure's insignia.

PSYCHOLOGY
The one thing that sets the tone for the vast majority of Shujin's personality is the fact that, in his mind, he has never had a father figure in his life. Yes, his dad is alive, but a father who lives a shinobi's life, as well as being a councilman, may as well be dead. He looks at the image of his dad with a degree of contempt, but he keeps his eyes low whenever he is actually in his father's presence. Shujin just doesn't understand how a man could put his job before his own son, and for this, he feels he can never forgive his dad. After all, isn't that something that everything man dreams about: having a son? Or, maybe Shujin just wasn't the son his dad dreamed about?
The saying "like father, like son" applies only marginally to Shujin. He admires his old man, yes, but seeing how his dad put work over him made Shujin take being a shinobi less serious than it should be. In fact, it could be considered the reason why he hasn't found his niche. He doesn't put his occupation "last", but he definitely puts it nowhere near "first". He prefers to instead partake in other things, such as writing, studying, or sketching. Most importantly though, he makes certain to put other people before his work, and he would blow an entire mission without second thought if it meant saving the life of an ally.
Subsequently, there are a lot of important things that he's never considered: his talents and where he fits in the military, combat and what it would take to kill someone, and the the shinobi life and what it would take to rank up. Needless to say, he carries somewhat of a poor work ethic, and most people would probably consider him a lazy kid who got by on luck. In all honesty though, most of these accusations would be right on the money, for Shujin is typically more wrapped up in theory than action. It is, partially, the reason why he puts things such as writing and studying over his job.
Shujin's low self-esteem is also attribute to his detachment from his dad. For most of his life, up until only a few months ago, he felt that his dad had been staying away from him because he, Shujin, wasn't the son that his dad had dreamed about, and this lead to Shujin seeing himself as undesirable. That is why he keeps his hair messy; what's the point? That is why he wears a hoodie and a hat; who would want to see his body? It produces something of an envy for those who can be confident, and an unexplainable spark of emotion arises when he is around people like this.
As contradictory as it may sound though, Shujin is also an attention seeker, wishing to find his dad in most anyone. Because of this, he is always trying to squeeze himself into places of attention. Even if he won't speak at first, he only wishes to be seen, and therefore acknowledged. It is one of his greatest weaknesses, as he will do some of the most stupid things if it means that he'll be accepted. During his academy days, this was showcased by the pranks that he would pull at the requests of his peers.
Not all bad though, Shujin also developed a very joking nature from not having his old man around. It was something that helped him cope with the pain. More often than not, you can find the young Genin joking around in an attempt to get a laugh, sometimes at his own expense. He would be the stereotypical joker of the group, telling all types of jokes whether good or bad. More often than not, they're bad. That doesn't stop him though, for if a person doesn't laugh, he'll just keep trying. This is also the case even with serious comments. If you asked if he had any ideas, for example, he would tell you his idea with a mocking undertone.
He is also very curious, and he has a hard time controlling himself when something catches his attention. Of course, this is also one of his downfalls or weaknesses, and it tends to get him into a lot of trouble. He is the type of person that would venture far and beyond, even sneaking out of the village if he had to (of course, not realizing the danger in leaving without permission). Even if he has no ideas himself, all it takes is another mind similar to his own to introduce an attractive idea. Unfortunately, this also shows in his speech, as he tends to let things slip that other people would keep retained.
When it comes to anger, Shujin displays a great deal of self control, but this is only because he sees so bad of himself that nothing done or said to or about him has much affect. To him, its expected for people to pass him over or talk him down, so he brushes it off and moves on. If he does happen to get angry though, it would be a sight to see. This is because his anger manifests as his anger toward his dad, and whoever the recipient of such feelings is will be in for a piece of Hell.

HISTORY
Shujin was born a single child, so he has lived a very dull life for the most part. He grew up with no friends, and to make it worse, his father was too busy to keep him company. He did have reason to feel lucky though. For one, the family that he was born into, Rangumaru (丸語, "Perfection of Language"), was a family of great weight in Iwagakure no Sato. Over the years, it had produced a number of notable shinobi who held notable positions; for example, his dad, a councilman, was born the son of the adviser to the former Tsuchikage. Two, he was lucky because he had a loving mother to step in and nurture him, filling in as best she could for the boy's dad and his life as a single child.
Now, the name Rangumaru reveals a lot about Shujin's inheritance off the bat, and that is that he was born into a family that valued knowledge. His given name, Shujin (主人; "Master") is a reflection of this, as his entire name implies a "Master of the Perfection of Language" or a "Master of Knowledge". Because of this, he was not trained primarily for shinobi-hood like other Genin. Instead, he was trained by the books and occupied with his studies. Among the things that most easily melded with Shujin were writing and studying. Writing was something that came naturally for the boy, and he used it as a source of catharsis, writing out varies short stories that reflected his relationship with his dad. Studying on the other hand came from his great attention span and curiosity. When it came to studying, his mom didn't just tell him to study, she taught him how to do it. Because of this, his studying was both qualitative and quantitative and speedy.
As the years passed by, it seemed that he more stories that Shujin wrote, the longer they got, and the longer they got, the more involved he became with plot mechanics and character conception and development. The more he studied, the more his curiosity grew, and the more his curiosity grew, the more wanted to absorb. This combination was the first dive that lead to his attachment to theory over action, as he used it more so than action when performing his favorite hobbies. This was also when he fist developed, or rather discovered, his interest in the human body, and it eventually became apart of his studies.
At age seven, Shujin joined the academy, which was a year earlier than what was normal. This was on the grounds that his performance for entry was deemed above average for his age group. Unfortunately, this was only judged on something that Shujin was good at: theory. If he had been judged in a way that required action, he would have undoubtedly failed. Even less fortunate, this began to display itself during his classes.
For the first year, Shujin was heavily distracted from his lessons. For the most part, it was simply the shock of being in a new, crowded place where he didn't belong. Couple this with his disinterest and overall lack of focus in what was going on and you get terrible grades across the board. Sad as it may be, even then his dad paid no attention to what was going on, and Shujin had to be reprimanded by his mom alone. Of course, Shujin's ears caught the message and he began to focus more than before.
It was during the second year that he started meditating, and he found his focus in the lessons about chakra control. He practiced in class as well as at home, meditating during the latter. His aim was to gain the best chakra control in his class, which he eventually did, but he quickly learned that it wouldn't help him much. While it did allow him to succeed in Ninjutsu, he failed in other lessons, and as they had begun to spar that year, his failure in action hit home again. Despite his efforts, he still couldn't reach the bar.
The third year brought along a new problem: peer pressure. Although Shujin was finding new hope in the use of basic tools, he was starting to fall into "the wrong crowd". Other kids noticed his intellect and knowledge, and they began to befriend him in order to use him. For the next two years, he was lending his mind and body to them: his mind for work and tutoring and his body for pranks of all types around the village. He did these things because he felt that he was accepted and acknowledged, but he found out nearing the end of his curriculum that this wasn't the case.
Before school ended, the crowd left him.
It was the worst and most awkward experience of his life, and in the same month that he was left behind, he got an explanation from his mom for why hid dad was rarely around. She had it had to do with the man's work, but that didn't help matters at all. By the time Shujin had graduated, his chakra control had peeked at the top of his class, and his use of the academy techniques and basic tools offered some form of redemption. He graduated in the middle of his class, closer to "dead last" than he could have hoped.

Chakra Control
The first of two skills that Shujin has been well-versed in since early on is chakra control, and from his teachers to his parents, it has been said that he has an affinity for the trade. It is the result of periods of solitude in which he would meditate, opting to focus on his chakra as opposed to focusing on nothing. As he did this, his chakra began to feel more and more like an extension of his body, and that is what it is today. For Shujin, controlling his chakra has quickly become as easy as moving a finger, which is undoubtedly the highest level of control in his rank. To add to that, he would also practice his chakra molding while striking through hand seals, so the formation of hand seals has also become like a rhythmic cadence to him.Knowledge
The second of two skills that Shujin is well-versed in is knowledge. No, this does not refer to him being intelligent; rather, it refers to what he knows and what he has studied. For example, he holds great knowledge in all combat forms, even though he does not practice any of them. This includes Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, and even less common things for Genin such as Fūinjutsu--the latter of which seems to be one that he is attuned to. Typically, it isn't uncommon for Shujin to spot weaknesses and strengths in combat types, as he has the knowledge to do so; however, he does not have the skill to capitalize.
